The six units below frame a process for assessing the performance of landscapes in meeting stakeholders’ goals for sustaining food and fiber production, conserving biodiversity and ecosystem services, and securing local livelihoods.

Unit 1 Defining the approach

Unit 2 Engaging stakeholders

Unit 3 Creating performance goals and criteria

Unit 4 Choosing indicators

Unit 5 Establishing a baseline

Unit 6 Tracking change

Continuous improvement

The stakeholders establish the goals and criteria against which the performance of the landscape is measured, and choose the indicators which values are tracked over time. Comparing the values of the indicators will reveal whether the landscape is `moving in the right direction’ with respect to the goals. The information generated will also help stakeholders to validate the choose of indicators and decide the type of changes in practice that may be needed to improve landscape performance.
